Deborah Kelly – Day 3

December 18, 2010

On Thursday, September 30 from 12:00 – 5:00, Deborah, Matt, and I met at aceartinc. ready to start another collaborative art-making session. Although a few people had expressed interest in attending earlier, there was no guaranteed participation so, in the end, it turned into a rather quiet day. A few people stopped in to see what was going on, but didn’t have time to hang out with us and talk about and/or make artwork on the topic of diversity. Instead, while the three of us talked about the past few days among other things, Deborah worked on her talk for MAWA while Matt and I worked on components for HAM Happens including the HAM mascot costume. This pic is of Matt stirring up some papier-mâché.

Later that evening, Deborah joined hundreds of citizens for Winnipeg’s annual Take Back the Night march aimed at raising awareness about the right of all people to be safe in their communities, which is shamefully not a reality for women in particular. The march was organized by members of the U of W and U of M Women’s Centres and was preceded by a moving drum circle then inspiring speeches by local community leaders. After the march, participants met inside the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre for warm beverages, snacks, socializing and solidarity building.

What do we want? Safe streets! When do we want them? NOW!
