Showing Up, Speaking Out (at a glance)

July 2, 2010

Showing Up, Speaking Out is indeed a very large project with many partners and components. We are still sorting out some details, but to help you get a sense of how you might be able to get involved, we’ve created a mini-summary which explains that…

Showing Up, Speaking Out..

.. is a month-long project involving artists working with community members to develop performance-based interventions about issues that matter to civic life (Sept 3 – Oct 5, 2010)
… is transparent, spontaneous, process-driven, and designed to encourage open engagement while reclaiming the notion of public space as a viable forum for discussion
… is non-hierarchical and considers all participants full collaborators in the artistic process; all are welcome
… is initiated by local curator, Milena Placentile, in partnership with a range of organizations including: aceartinc., Art City, Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Winnipeg, Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art, RAW: Gallery of Architecture and Design, The University of Winnipeg’s Students’ Association, Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art, and Video Pool Media Arts Centre
… is generously supported by the Winnipeg Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts

The artists presently confirmed include:

  • Inge Hoonte (Netherlands/USA) on recreation from Sept 3 – 11
  • Tomas Jonsson (Calgary) on social housing/poverty from Sept 12 – 18
  • Deborah Kelly (Australia) on diversity from Sept 27 – Oct 5

One artist is still to be selected in partnership with Urban Shaman and one more will be selected through an open call closing on July 5.

Citizens from throughout the city will soon be invited to join the featured artists at aceartinc. to participate in the design and delivery of interventions in public space. Participants will be invited to share thoughts about their experiences and the potential impact of their actions, as well as leave documentation and other traces of their actions/ideas in the gallery as part of an evolving installation. A blog and e-publication will be produced in conjunction with the live and ephemeral aspects of the project.

You are most welcome to get involved! Please contact or visit for details.
